PL: Tell us who you are and what you do.
MG: My name is Matt Gresham and I’m a singer/songwriter/story teller man who lives in Sydney, but is originally from Rockingham. In my spare time I love surfing, yoga and skateboarding oh, and food, lots of food.
PL: What do you sing in the shower?
MG: F**k the police - NWA, What’s Love Got To Do With It - Tina Turner, Backstreets Back - Backstreet Boys, Big Red Car - The Wiggles. Oh, and any angry song by DMX ‘cos he barks like a dog so sick, ha ha ha ha. Check out his version of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.
PL: Who are your musical heroes?
MG: I’m a huge fan of Ben Harper especially - his old music Live from Mars album would be my pick. Also I think James Bay is incredible as a songwriter and and guitar player. Lauryn Hill is amazing, such style and grace in the way she sings and raps. Also if you don’t know who Talib Kweli is you really, really should check him out ASAP.
PL: What’s on your Spotify/iPod playlist at the moment?
MG: Ed Sheeran, Jack Johnson, Gregory Alan Isakov, Ray Charles and Jaymes Young.
PL: Who would be your dream musical mentor or collaborator?
MG: I’m actually collaborating with my dream artist at the moment - can’t wait to share it with the world so keep your eyes out for that one. As far as mentors go, I would love to work with someone from the classically-trained world. I think it would change the way I see music a lot as the way I’ve learnt was the self-taught route. I think it would be a real eye opener for me personally.
PL: Tell us about your new album.
MG: The new album I’m creating is a body of work written in the last year which features songs written with Jaymes Young who is by far my favourite songwriter I’ve worked with - such an amazing talented and humble man. The second single Ghost is going very well and will be followed by my first official Australian tour in July which I’m frothing about. Hope to see you guys at a show.
PL: What do you love about Perth/WA?
MG: I love how you can go to the beach and there is no one there, and I’m also a huge lover of my home town Rockingham. It’s so peaceful - we have so many nice places to visit and incredible wildlife too.
PL: What are you looking forward to most in the next few weeks?
MG: My mother and sister are visiting me in a few weeks - I can’t wait to show them Sydney.
PL: How would you sum up your fashion style?
MG: Fashion? ha ha you’re kidding. I like to keep things simple in that department I love Dickies pants for skateboarding in and I’m a huge fan of plain T-shirts. I have been loving T Jay clothing and Agent Board Company, local companies from my home town. It’s nice to support your local surf and skate shops, keeps the buisness local, y’all.
